Aquarium Pula is a public aquarium and marine conservation institution based in Croatia, actively engaged in research, rescue, and ex-situ conservation of Adriatic marine species. We started our first conservation activities on the noble pen shell, Pina nobilis, (a critically endangered, endemic Mediterranean bivalve) in 2019, when we detected the first mass mortality events in the southern Adriatic. One year later, we joined the national conservation project. Our first breeding attempts under controlled conditions began in 2024.
Our main activity in LIFE Pinnacare focuses on the reproduction of Pinna nobilis under controlled conditions, while our molecular laboratory will participate in activities including analyses related to health status, individual resilience, and population monitoring.
